Most residents in chamba are vegetarian by choice . Their day to day food consists of rice , chapatti , lentil and vegetable curry. However , the food prepared in a typical Chamba home is unique in ingredients and taste.
GADDI FOOD
Gaddi Tribe living in Bharmour Tehsil are equally fond of non vegetarian dishes. However , their staple food consists of cakes made out of maize and wheat and this they take with a kind of black lentil and Rajmah (kidney bean) . Also Rajma Madra is common in all communities in Chamba .
RAJMA MADRA
No celebration in Chamba is complete without Rajma Madra. The dish is unique to Chamba & Has a very ancient origin. According to hearsay, Raja Jaistambh , the son of Raja Maru , was very fond of Kashmiri dishes and so he invited a few cooks from neighbouring Kashmir and asked them to prepare a unique dish using all kinds of ingredients harvested in Chamba valley . This was to be offered to the local deity.
At the time the main produce of the state was Rajma , different kinds of spices & milk. So , Madra was created by using Rajma , 31 different kind of spices and lots of yogurt and ghee( Clarified Butter).
Now they use chick peas instead of red kidney bean , in Hamirpur , they also used black eyed beans etc.

Dham In Chamba - Its a community feast cooked by hereditary cooks. In general, a typical dham menu starts with rice , moong dal and rajma madra. this is followed by boor ki kari and mash ki dal , topped with sweet and sour sauce know as khatta. The dham ends with the mitt ; it is made from sweetened rice and is with a with lots of dry fruits and raisins.Chowgan In Chamba - Iravati in mohalla Sapri , They serve Chasnidar , a week and sour fruit dish , made with dried fruits
