BUSINESS AND ECONOMY INTRO

While agriculture still plays a major role in the economy of the are , industry (Small & Cottage ) & tourism are also major in contributing factors in that.

AGRICULTURE 

Farmers in Chamba initially grew cereal crops like rice, wheat &maze. However, due to smaller land holdings in the district , cultivation of cereal crops could not be generate enough income for farmers .

PROJECT GREEN GOLD

This project was started with the sim of improving the economic condition of farmers in Chamba through self help groups .

The 1st strategy was to train the farmers in the scientific mythology of agriculture

2nd was to introduce different cash crops to them that would fetch them more profits. 

The project also supplies good quality seed and fertilisers at a reasonable cost and provides all help in marketing the produce. 

FARMING IN CHAMBA TODAY 

Today farmers around chamba most grow different types of vegetable like potatoes, cabbage , cauliflower, peas, tomatoes etc. Fruit & mushroom cultivation has also become popular. 

The government is also stressing on improved dairy products. The initiative taken by the government helped the farmers in rearing their cattle. Now they are able to breed the cows better ,which not only provide milk ,but are also healthier 

TRADE AND COMMERCE 

A large percentage of the residents of the town earn their living by trading. Most of the shops and shopping arcades are located near the Chougan . Apart from day to day necessities , some of these shops also sell beautiful handicrafts made in Chamba.

COTTAGE INDUSTRIES 

The rural & secluded characteristics of Chamba have, over the years, given rise to large number of handicrafts such as weaving & spinning , shoe making & leather craft, woodworking & carpentry, black & gold smithy , pottery etc. They were initially made to meet the necessity of the local population. Now these traditional arts are now being used augment family income . 

SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIES 

Chamba does not have any large or medium scale industry. however, the ares like Parel & Sultanpur have a few agro & wood based industries. many units manufacture steel furniture to e used in offices and homes.In addition, the Handicraft & Handloom Corporation of Himachal Pradesh runs a shoe making factory in Rang Mahal in Chamba And a weaving centre where shawls are being made. 

Sago Fruit Industry , located on the Kajjiar road, is s well known  agro based industry in chamba . The company produces pickles , jams & fruit drinks. they also produce honey collected by domesticated honey bees from the rich flora region.

HOSPITALITY 

Chamba with its ancient temple & awesome scenic beauty, is slowly emerging as a popular tourist destination. It also acts as the starting point of many popular trekking routes. Therefore, the town has effective hospitality that is fully capable of catering to the needs of the visitors. This in turn has contributed to the economy.of the town.
